The Lenoir Preserve is a 40-acre nature preserve that includes forests and field habitats, among other things. The aqueduct, which lies close to it, is situated on hills overlooking the Hudson River, affording wonderful views of the river.

A variety of attractive specimen trees and plants brought from all over the globe may be seen on the site, which was originally home to two Hudson River estates and is now a private residence. Copper beech trees from Europe, gingko trees from Asia, and Douglas firs from the Pacific Northwest are among the outstanding specimens in this collection. These imports join the ranks of native sugar maples, red oaks, hemlocks, pines, and tulip trees in providing habitat for various animals, including woodpeckers, owls, and bats, among other species.

Every spring and fall, bird lovers converge to a single location to see large hawk migrations. Participants in the official raptor tracking counts will learn about raptor identifying marks such as flying patterns and silhouettes. In addition, they will get the opportunity to participate in official tracking counts of raptors.

The butterfly garden is most active during the summer months when a wide variety of butterflies frequents it. A dragonfly pond nearby offers the essential habitat for a diverse range of aquatic insects while also attracting birds and other animals to the area. It is entirely up to volunteers from the Hudson River Audubon Society to keep the butterfly and hummingbird garden in good condition. In addition, the Nature Center is home to a wide variety of natural history displays.

Volunteers at the Lenoir Preserve

All people who like butterflies and gardening are invited to participate. Unfortunately, the butterfly garden at Lenoir Preserve needs volunteers. The tasks that must be completed are detailed in the next section. For further information or to volunteer, call (914) 968-5851, which is the number for the curator.

Spring

General cleaning, weeding, planting, pruning, grass cutting, and trimming of the garden borders are all tasks that must be completed.

Summer

The weeds must be pulled, and the weeds must be removed again. Regular watering, especially in a dry summer, grass mowing, and pruning of the garden borders are all required.

Fall

Maintenance tasks include:
  • Weeding.
  • Seed gathering.
  • Moving plants across garden beds.
  • Maintaining water pressure.
  • Mowing the grass.
  • Trimming the garden borders.

Lenoir Preserve offers year-round interpretive programs taught by certified environmental educators for school, scout, and community groups. A cost of $100 is charged for programs that are roughly one hour in duration and may accommodate up to thirty attendees. From pre-school to adult, program material may be modified to meet the needs of students of all ages and interests. All activities are excellent ways to get people interested in their local environment while also providing opportunities for hands-on learning.
